Rune: Sowilo ☀️ | Collection: Protection Runes
This is not a spark you chase. This is the fire that finds you.
Sowilo is the rune of solar energy, illumination, success and personal truth. It’s the warmth on your back when you thought you were alone. The clarity that cuts through fog. The internal compass that quietly says: this way.
This piece is for the ones who’ve been in the dark and made it back brighter. For the ones learning to trust their own light, even when it flickers. It honours the strength it takes to keep going – to step into visibility, to choose joy, to rise with purpose.
Wearing Sowilo is not about blazing. It’s about radiating.
It doesn’t shout. It shines. From the inside out. From the core. From the place where your power lives when no one else is watching.
This rune reminds us that victory isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s choosing to believe in yourself again. Sometimes it’s resting without guilt. Sometimes it’s daring to dream with the full force of the sun behind you.
Let it energise you. Let it remind you who you are. Let it burn away what no longer belongs.
You are the light you were looking for.

About the Shape of the Rune
The Sowilo rune, representing the sun, has appeared in several forms throughout runic history. In the Elder Futhark – the oldest known runic alphabet – it began with a shape similar to a Greek sigma (“Σ”) and evolved into a lightning-bolt-like “S” form in later usage. This is the version we have used here.
In the Younger Futhark and Anglo-Saxon rune sets, the rune appears in alternate forms, including the “Sigel” rune and later “bookhand S” variants. These changes reflect the evolution of language, culture, and regional symbolism across time.
We’ve chosen the later Elder Futhark “S” variant for its clear visual resonance with solar energy and upward movement. It honours the ancient roots of the rune while aligning with our intention to reclaim it as a symbol of personal radiance, clarity, and self-powered confidence.

Common Questions
Is Sowilo a protection rune?
Yes, but it protects through illumination and self-belief. Rather than a boundary, Sowilo offers clarity, purpose and the energy to burn away confusion. It’s a powerful rune for moments of growth, healing, or visibility.
What happens if Sowilo is reversed?
Sowilo doesn’t have a reversed form in the traditional sense. But in divination, a “blocked” Sowilo may point to self-doubt, burnout, or a fear of being seen. It’s a gentle prompt to reconnect with your own light and move at your own pace.
Can anyone wear the Sowilo rune?
Yes. Sowilo is a symbol of personal truth, clarity, and radiant energy and anyone can wear it as a reminder of their own light. It’s not part of a closed practice, and using it with intention, rather than as a trend or gimmick, honours its origins and power.
A Note on Symbolism
The Sowilo rune has deep roots in ancient pre-Christian cultures as a symbol of the sun, clarity, vitality and personal empowerment. Unfortunately, like many powerful symbols, it was later appropriated and misused by extremist groups.
At Morrigan Vex, we recognise this painful history and want to be clear: we reject all forms of hate, oppression and appropriation. Our use of this rune is rooted in its original, life-affirming meanings; celebrating truth, inner strength and the human spirit.
We believe symbols carry the energy we give them. Here, we choose to reclaim this one with intention, light and respect.
